NEW DELHI: Union Minister Anantkumar Hegde on Thursday apologised in the Lok Sabha over his controversial remarks on the Constitution.
As soon as the House assembled at 1100 hrs, there was uproar by Congress members over Mr Hegde’s remarks.
Amid uproar, Mr Hegde, while speaking on the issue, said he respects the Constitution, Parliament and Baba Saheb Ambedkar. He said the Constitution is supreme for him, ”there can be no question on it, as a citizen I can never go against it.”
However, Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge was not satisfied with Mr Hegde’s clarification, following which Speaker Sumitra Mahajan asked Mr Hegde to apologise over his remarks.
Mr Hegde said if anyone was hurt by his remarks he tenders his apology.
He, however, said his statement was presented in a distorted manner.
The deadlock in the House ended after Mr Hegde’s apology and Question Hour proceedings started smoothly.
The Lok Sabha on Wednesday had witnessed four adjournments, during the Question Hour, Zero Hour, and twice in the post-lunch session over the issue. (AGENCIES)
