DODA, Jan 2: A video purportedly showing a woman jumping into the ice-cold Chenab river from a bridge here has gone viral on social media.
As per police sources, a 20-year-old college student suddenly climbed the railing of the crowded bridge and jumped into the river Chenab today morning.
The shocked onlookers immediately raised an alarm. Some of them clicked some pictures and shoot a video of the girl floating on the river for nearly three minutes and then disappearing in the water.
The girl had been identified Rakshu Devi, daughter of Koushal Kumar, a resident of Rokali, tehsil Thathri. She was final year student of Government Degree College (GDC) Doda and was staying in a rented room in Doda town.

“After getting the information, a police party rushed to the spot and started searching for the girl with the help of rescuers and SDRF team”, SSP Doda Mohammad Shabir said, adding that the police are trying to find out why the girl jumped into the river.
Regarding body, SSP said the body has not been fished out from river. Due to darkness, the search operation has been suspended and will resume tomorrow morning, he added
The video, which went viral, has drawn criticism from several people with one Facebook-user commenting, “Look at these people they are filming at the scene instead they should have at least tried to rescue”.
Another user wrote, “Instead of saving her, they are enjoying, by making video, shame on these people, totally inhumane”.
Some of the people also commented on social site Whatsapp, where the video was also viral. The Whatsapp users’ comment: “Shame on people filming the incident and not saving the woman”.
A case under relevant Sections has been registered at Doda Police Station and investigation started to ascertain the reason behind such extreme step.
