JAMMU, Nov 22: The Select Committee of Legislative Council, met here today under the chairmanship of Ajay Kumar Sadhotra and discussed the issues regarding the establishment of Transworld Muslim University, Sheikh-ul-Aalam Research University, Kashmir and Shri Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa University.
Legislators, Sheikh Ghulam Rasool, Ravinder Kumar Sharma, Syed Asgar Ali, Secretary Law G. H. Tantanry, Secretary Higher Education, Gazanffer Hussain, Secretary Legislative Council, Mohammad Ashraf and other officers of Council Secretariat were present on the occasion.
In a threadbare discussion on the subject, the members and officers expressed their opinions and put forth valuable suggestions. They said that it is a state subject and need not any approval from University Grants Commission.
The Chairman instructed Secretaries of Higher Education and Law Departments to provide a copy of relevant documents pertaining to the subject, to the members for their perusal so that committee is able to frame and submit its recommendations to the Government accordingly. He said education is primary requirement for development, adding that the Government is taking several concrete measures to create requisite educational infrastructure at primary as well as higher levels in the State.
It was felt that there is need for further expansion of education sector in the State so that the students seeking admission in higher education need not to move outside the State for the purpose. The committee observed that professionalism should be primary motive behind establishment of educational institutions and that some control of the Government is required over such institutions to make them accountable to public.
