JAMMU, Jan 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh today held high-level security review of situation in the country including Jammu and Kashmir at the annual DGPs and IGPs conference at Tekanpur in Madhya Pradesh. Modi called for further strengthening security apparatus while Rajnath charged that terror infrastructure continued to exist in Pakistan.
The three-day conference is being attended by more than 250 top officers from State police forces and Central police organizations to discuss security requirements in the country to meet with any kind of threat from across the borders, militants in Jammu and Kashmir, insurgents in North-East and Naxalism-affected States.
“At the Conference of DGPs and IGPs in Tekanpur, Madhya Pradesh, there were insightful presentations and fruitful discussions on aspects relating to our security apparatus. There was also a presentation on the implementation status of decisions taken during the last three years,” the Prime Minister said in a series of tweets on the annual conference.
Another tweet said Modi specifically mentioned the importance of technology and human interface for the police force.
Modi had day-long deliberations with the top security brass of the country at the annual DGPs and IGPs conference at the BSF Academy.
During the last meeting, issues such as cross-border terrorism and radicalization were discussed in detail. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of leadership, soft skills and collective training.
Sources said cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan-sponsored militancy was “one of the major issue” of discussions at the annual conference and steps required to tackle the menace of terrorism figured prominently.
The threat of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) also remained part of the discussions though the ISIS has failed to make any major impact either in Jammu and Kashmir or in other parts of the country.
In his tweets, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he appreciated many important issues pertaining to policing and internal security.
“We have gained a lot of ground in the recent past but certain challenges remain,” he said.
Rajnath said terror infrastructure in Pakistan continued to exist and the neighbouring country was leaving no stone unturned to fan trouble in Jammu and Kashmir.
Rajnath asked the police officers to take strong action against riots and desecration of religious places.
Sources said holding the Annual DGP Conference outside the national capital is in line with the Prime Minister’s vision that such conferences should be held across the country, and not just confined to Delhi.
DGPs Conference is an annual event in which top police officers from all over India share and discuss security related issues. Modi had addressed the conference earlier in Guwahati, Assam in 2014, Dhordo, Rann of Kutch, Gujarat in 2015 and National Police Academy, Hyderabad in 2016
The conference of the DGPs and IGPs is an annual affair, where senior police officers of the states and Centre meet and discuss issues.
Following a directive of Modi, the Home Ministry has been organizing the conference outside the national capital since it came to power in 2014.
During the last meeting in Hyderabad, issues such as cross-border terrorism and radicalization were discussed in detail.
As desired by the Prime Minister, the Home Ministry this year announced the names of 10 best-performing police stations in the country.
While addressing the DGPs conference in Gujarat’s Rann of Kutch, Modi had said the police officers should devise a parameter to identify the best police stations in the country.
Accordingly, R S Puram police station in Coimbatore followed by Hyderabad’s Panjagutta were named as the top two best-performing police stations in the country in different parameters, including crime control and serving the people.
