JAMMU, Nov 23: The police today foiled the bid of the Youth Wing of Jammu Kashmir  Democratic Front (JKDF) to take out a scooter rally in the city after creating barricades in front of Party Office at Gandhi Nagar where from the rally was to start.
The JKDF Youth Wing had given a call for the scooter rally today to garner public support for the first convention of the party to be held here on Sunday. However police did not allow the rally to be taken out from Gandhi Nagar Office of the party as a strong contingent of police was deputed there, a party spokesman said.
He alleged that even the JKDF activists who were on their way to party Office from different parts of the city were also not allowed to reach there by police and their scooters and motorcycles were snatched.
Some activists of the party also jostled with police at different places in their bid to take out the rally, the spokesman said, adding the small groups of party youth managed to take out the rally in the old city area.
The spokesman also accused the police of snatching the party banners and flags from its activists and to harass them.
The former Union Minister and MLA Jammu West, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta was seen arguing with police against what he called its “undemocratic action’’.
Later talking to media persons president JKDF Anil Gupta (Annu) strongly condemned the police action and termed it an undemocratic step. He said that in a democracy the people are free to take out peaceful rallies and such actions strengthen the democratic system. But it is unfortunate that the Coalition Government is acting in an authoritarian way and it wants to suppress the voice of masses by using force against them, he added.
Accusing the Government of behaving in a dictatorial manner, Gupta reiterated that his Party will continue its struggle for rule of law and justice in the State.  He said the Coalition Government is afraid of growing influence of JKDF in Jammu region so it is using the official machinery against them by misusing it.
