Traffic resumes on Kashmir highway after remaining suspended due to dharna

SRINAGAR: Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was disrupted on Thursday  for  more than an hour due to protest against unscheduled and frequent power cuts in south Kashmir district of Anantnag.

Hundreds of people, including women and children, took to the streets and blocked the National Highway at Bijbehara in Anantnag at 1120 hrs, against erratic power supply in their areas.

”We have been facing difficulties due to erratic power supply from last couple of months. The Government knows that stable power supply is a must for the people during harsh winter months, but unfortunately nothing is being done to address our problem,” a protestor said.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the highway as protesters were not allowing any vehicle, including those belonging to security forces to pass.

Senior officials of police and civil administration who reached the spot assured the agitators that their demands would be taken up with departments concerned.

Later, traffic was resumed on the highway.

A police spokesman taking to micro-blogging site twitter said, “Dharna lifted at Bijbehara, road through for traffic now”. (AGENCIES)
