Panchayat members face security threat: BSP

Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 24: State unit of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) today alleged that elections to the BDCs and four seats of Legislative Council can not fair as the Sarpanchs and Panchs were facing threat to their lives and demanding security. Addressing a press conference here today, State president of the party Tulsi Dass Langeh said that elections to the 4 seats of Legislative Councils are being held in the State but the Panchs and Sarpanchs who form the electoral college for elections of MLCs from Panchayats quota, are not safe. They have received threat to their lives and the Government has failed to provide them security. He claimed that elections can not be fair where voter is under threat. The BSP leader alleged that BDC polls were also cancelled and it appears that Government is in no mood to strengthen the Panchayati Raj institutions. The anti-national elements are being encouraged by the National Conference and no action is being taken against the people speaking against the country. He was referring to the ‘anti-national’ utterances of NC leader and former Minister Mustafa Kamaal, younger brother of Union Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah. Mr Langeh strongly pleaded for implementing 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments and said that if the coalition is serious in its words, it must go for these amendment. He also demanded that BDC elections be held without any further delay. The BSP leader said that Dr Harjeet and Ram Chand are the party candidates for Jammu-1 and Jammu-II. He urged the Panchs and Sarpanchs to cast vote in favour of BSP candidates. Mr Langeh further disclosed that 57 death anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar is being observed on December 6 here.
