Srinagar : Two militants were killed in a fierce encounter with security forces in south Kashmir district of Shopian on Wednesday evening, official sources said.
Director General of Police (DGP), Dr S P Vaid taking to micro blogging site twitter said, “In an encounter today at Saigund Shopian, two terrorists have been neutralised and weapons recovered. Unfortunately one boy was also killed in the cross-fire and two ladies sustained injuries. Search is still going on.”
On a tip-off about presence of militants, a joint search operation was launched by Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police, Army and CRPF at Chaigund Dairoo in Shopian this evening, sources told UNI. When security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, militants hiding there, opened indiscriminate fire with automatic weapons.
Two to three militants were trapped in the village, they said. The security force also retaliated, ensuing in an encounter, they said, adding that two militants were killed.
The operation was underway when the reports last came in, they added.
Additional security forces and state police personnel had been deployed outside the cordoned off area to prevent people from entering.
However, youth took to the streets and clashed with the security forces, who burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse the demonstrators, who were pelting stones and trying to disrupt the operation. A youth was killed and two women were injured in the security force firing on demonstrators. (Agencies)
