Crime Against Women

Sir,
This has reference to the editorial’Crime against Women'(DE, Jan 21, 2018).It is sad that even after about seven decades of freedom, crime against women continues to happen in our country.More distressing is the fact that crime against women in our state has shown an upward trend in 2017  over 2016.It happened despite the fact that more women are being recruited in the Police Cadres and more and more women police stations are being established and more and more women are getting education and  joining the government and private sectors at top positions. The crime against women includes molestation, harassment, dowry harassment, rape, physical abuse, domestic violence, kidnapping etc.It is a fact that crime against women is a national problem. Many girls and women are molested, raped, stalked in various parts of our country and if they resist the advances, they are killed, burnt alive or physically abused. In a shocking incident last year, a woman and her teenaged daughter  jumped off moving train to save themselves  from being molested. One wonders if we are really living in the civilised world, where women who are mothers, wives, sisters and daughters and who constitute about half of the world’s population are facing harassment by none other than men who should be there to protect them. There is need to take measures to put an end to crime against our women folk.Girls need to be provided more opportunities to make them self confident and self reliant. They ought to be trained in martial arts to defend themselves in case they find them in difficult circumstances. The parents need to inculcate high moral values in their children, particulary boys right from the childhood. The inspirational stories from scriptures showing respect for women need to be included in the syllabus  at the school and college level.Focus must be laid on education and empowerment of women.Efforts need to be made to check female foeticide and those who resort to this sin should be given exemplary punishment.Fast track courts need to be set up for speedy decisions related to crime against women.People should change their archaic mindset and learn to respect women to make this planet a better place to live in.
Yours etc….
