Remedying health hazard

Even the State High Court has become wary of Jammu Municipal Corporation’s inability of solving the issue of scientific disposal of huge waste and garbage to the tune of 380 metric tons produced by the Jammu city every day. Close to Bhagwati Nagar residential locality and on the bank of River Tawi this horrendous mountain of garbage is dumped without giving any bioremediation treatment. This is despite clear instructions from the Division Bench to which reference has been made through a PIL. Apart from known potential for health hazard, this huge dump of refuse is a temptation for the birds for scavenging. That would have been acceptable but Jammu airport is not far away from the site of dumping. Birds scavenging the dumped garbage swarm the place and as such become a potent threat for the aircrafts that land and take off in close proximity. This was one of the reasons why the High Court had given instructions to the JMC to start bioremediation of the site. We fail to understand why the JMC is not able to respond to the court orders and why should it become so insensitive about the health hazards which open dumps of garbage entail for the citizenry.
This apart, the Kot Bhalwal site chosen by the JMC for setting up Solid Waste Management Plant, too, remains to be in a state of limbo. The two instances taken together show the scant sensitivity the JMC demonstrates about environmental health of the city of Jammu. We don’t think there is paucity of funds with the JMC; it is just insensitivity and lack of a sense of responsibility that puts the JMC and the Jammu citizenry in an embarrassing situation.
