JAMMU, Mar 7: International Women’s Day was celebrated with enthusiasm.
In a message on this day, Governor NN Vohra noted that considering the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day–“Time is Now: Rural and Urban Activists transforming Women’s lives”- all segments of our population must come forth to launch a sustained campaign for strongly supporting various endeavours which seek to protect women against violence, gender bias and unequal treatment of any kind.
Governor observed that there is a vast array of State and the Central Government Schemes which have the specific objective of promoting women’s health, education and empowerment. Each of these schemes needs to be effectively implemented if the cause of women is to be promoted.
Cautioning against the empowerment of women being confined only to individual success stories the Governor observed that it is important to ensure the balanced growth, empowerment and well-being of all women.
Meanwhile, Speaker Legislative Assembly Kavinder Gupta said that respect for women is not a new thing but it forms core of the Indian cultural legacy and it needs to be sustained and preserved.
He was speaking at a felicitation function organized by Sanskar Bharti and Samooh Theatre Women Wing to honor and felicitate the noted women from different fields here at KL Saigal Hall. The event was organized in connection with the International Women’s Day 2018. Minister of State for Culture and Education, Priya Sethi presided over the event, while Secretary JKAACL, Aziz Hajini and political leader Ravi Tickoo shared the podium.
Noted women from various fields included Dr Indu Koul, Sunaina Mehta, Vainakshi Koul, Shafqat Chib, Mona Pandoh, DySP Usha Kher, SHO Anita Katal, Santosh Sangra, Manjiri Singh and Seerat were honoured for their contribution in their respective fields.
In collaboration with the Department of Lifelong Learning, University of Jammu, one day workshop was organized by the Smt Shanti Gupta Center for Women Studies MIER College to celebrate the ‘International Women’s Day’ at its campus.
The theme of the workshop was “Understanding Gender, Society and Sexual Harassment.” Dr Kavita Suri, Director and Head, Department of Lifelong Learning and Dr Savita Nayyar, Senior Assistant Professor, Department of Law, University of Jammu were the resource persons. Dr Hafiza Muzaffar, Former Sectary of Women State Commission, J&K was the special invitee on the occasion.
Dr Renu Gupta, Vice Chairperson and Principal presented the welcome address. Students of fourth semester of different departments along with faculty of MIER College participated in the workshop. The workshop was conducted in two sessions. In the first session, Dr Suri with the help of the videos and worksheet explained the difference between gender and sex.
The second session was marked by case study discussion in which the resource person, Dr. Nayyar explained the concept of sexual harassment which refers to a personal attack on women’s mind and body, instilling fear and violating her basic rights. Suvidha Jamwal, a BEd student conducted the program. Monika Rathore, Co-coordinator Center for Women MIER Studies presented the formal vote of thanks.
