Rains lash Valley, snowfall in hills

Srinagar, Mar 14: Kashmir valley was lashed by rains and hills had fresh snowfall today while an avalanche warning was issued for the upper reaches of Kashmir.
The Meteorological Department has forecast widespread rains across Kashmir for next 24 hours during which the hills may have fresh snowfall.
The intermittent rains continued in Kashmir since last night bringing down the temperature in the Valley. The hills across Kashmir had fresh snowfall.
Zojila and Sonamarg areas of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district received fresh snowfall.
An official said that seven inches of fresh snow has accumulated at Zojila and around four inches at Sonamarg. He said that the snow has been already cleared from the road at Sonamarg market and the process is on to clear the snow from the Srinagar-Leh highway.
A BRO official said that if weather allows the snow clearance process will soon touch the zero point at KM-108 of Srinagar-Leh highway to facilitate the re-opening of the highway.
The upper reaches in North Kashmir including Razdhan Pass, Sadna Top and Furkiyan Top also witnessed fresh snowfall.
Low-to-medium intensity avalanche warning was issued for various areas in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.
The rains in Kashmir led to drop in the temperatures across Kashmir and it stayed below normal. The normal temperature in Srinagar dropped by 3.7 degrees and settled at 11.0 degrees Celsius. Qazigund recorded maximum of 11.0 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam 9.0 degrees Celsius, Kupwara 7.2 degrees Celsius, Kokernag 10.8 degrees Celsius and Gulmarg 8.0 degrees Celsius.
The officials here issued fresh avalanche warning in Kashmir after snowfall in the hills and forecast of more snowfall for next 48 hours.
“On the basis of information received from SASE, Medium danger avalanche warning has been issued for Kupwara-Chowkibal-Tanghdar, Bara-mulla, Gulmarg, Furkian-Z Gali, Gurez and Bandipora,” said a spokesman.
“Low danger warning has been issued for Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban,Doda, Kishtwar Udhampur, Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Ganderbal, Kargil, Leh districts and Srinagar-Jammu highway.”
People living in these avalanche-prone areas have been advised by the disaster management authority to take precautionary measures.
