Residents of South Kashmir village facing water shortage

SRINAGAR, Mar 22: Residents of Sursona village in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district are battling with an acute shortage of water as the existing source is allegedly contaminated and unfit for drinking purpose.
“Sursona and Shoal used to get water supply from the same source but Shoal has been connected to the new source and our village was left out,” locals said.
The people alleged that they were being deliberately left out from availing the benefits of a water supply scheme. “New water supply pipes have been laid for Shoal village adjacent to ours so that they can avail better water supply from the Bumzoo water supply scheme,” the villagers said, lamenting that their village has been left out deliberately.
The locals lamented that the water supply pipes and the source are both contaminated and the water is unfit for human consumption. “If Shoal is being considered for better water supply why not Sursona,” the locals asked.
Dozens of women and children complained they were suffering from the water-borne diseases due to poorly filtered water. “Many kids are suffering from jaundice and others have developed several intestinal infections. Some are suffering from Hepatitis C,” a local said.
MLA Homeshalibugh, Abdul Majeed Bhat,  when contacted said that he has already taken up the matter with the concerned Minister and pipes have been sanctioned and they will be laid within one week.
