10,000 intra-cardiac device implantations performed by SKIMS

SRINAGAR, Mar 22:  Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) today said that the Department of Cardiology SKIMS is soon to be recognized as a “Centre of excellence” for device therapies in India as the department is one of the highest volume centers of intra-cardiac device implantation and has performed more than 10,000 procedures including pacemakers, intra-cardiac defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization therapies.
HOD, Cardiology, Dr. Nisar Tamboo while giving details in a statement said that the department has performed more than 15000 diagnostic and therapeutic coronary procedures and is among the few high volume coronary centers in the country.
“Complex and high risk procedures including left main coronary interventions, bifurcation stenting and recanalization of chronic total occlusions are performed on regular basis in the catheterization lab with excellent results. Cutting edge technologies including Intra-vascular ultrasound imaging (IVUS), fractional flow reserve (FFR) assessment and rotational atherectomy are being utilized wherever necessary to optimize the results of various procedures done,” he said, adding, “The department has also witnessed a spectacular  growth of pediatric interventions over a period of time, with over 100 procedures being performed annually with high success rate.”
Director SKIMS, Dr. Omar Javed Shah said that the Department of Cardiology SKIMS is the largest cardiac facility in the State as it caters to nearly half of the cardiac disease burden in the entire J&K. “It provides the state of art diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac care to the patients and is comparable to the reputed cardiac centers in the world,” he said.
A SKIMS spokesman in the statement said that the department has also excelled in the field of research with more than 100 research articles published in high impact international cardiology journals.
