JAMMU, Apr 3: In a major achievement, University of Jammu and University of Kashmir have been listed among top 100 Universities in the country.
In the all India ranking for 2018, assessed by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, Kashmir University has secured 47th position while the Jammu University has bagged 51st position.
Assessed by MHRD under National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Kashmir University has been granted 43.96 score while Jammu University got 43.19 score, slightly less from KU even as both the universities have improved their tally from the last year ranking.
Last year, Jammu University’s ranking under NIRF was 63rd while Kashmir University’s ranking was 73rd.
Even as no other University in Jammu and Kashmir could secure a position under top 100 varsities of the country, the Engineering College of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University has emerged on 94th rank among all the Engineering Institutes.
Getting 36.28 score, the SMVDU Engineering College performed better than even a number of NITs across the country, ranked by MHRD this year under NIRF.
The ranking of Indian Universities and other educational institutions in 2018 under Institutional Ranking Framework was displayed today by the Union Ministry for Human Resource Development (HRD). About 4500 institutes had submitted their details for the ranking under NIRF.
Pertinent to mention that the National Institutional Ranking Framework was instituted by MHRD in 2015 and the first rankings were announced in 2016. NIRF outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology is based on developing a set a metrics for ranking of academic institutions, based on the parameters agreed upon by a Core Committee. The parameters broadly cover `Teaching, Learning and Resources”, “Research and Professional Practices”, “Graduation Outcome”, “Outreach & Inclusivity” and “Perception”.
This year the rankings have been announced in nine broad categories. This is the first year that MHRD has ranked Medical, Law and Architecture institutes in the country. In addition, this year participation was made mandatory for institutes which were receiving public grants from the Government.
Among the 4500 institutes, which participated in the NIRF rankings, IISc Bengaluru stood out again and topped in the Overall Category and in the University category as well.
IIT Madras has emerged as the best engineering institute in the rankings. IIM Ahmedabad has landed the top rank among management institutes. National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Mohali is the best institute in Pharmacy category and Miranda House, Delhi University has landed the top spot again this year in the College category. There have been some major shuffles in the College category with several new players making it to the top 10 colleges list this year.
For Medical, Law and Architecture streams, only top three were announced. AIIMS was ranked first among medical institutes. National Law School of India University, Bangalore, has emerged as the top institute for Law and IIT Kharagpur has been adjudged the best institute for Architecture in the country.
Since the first edition of the rankings were announced in 2016, NIRF has added categories and improved upon the parameters set to judge the institutes. In 2016, there were only four categories in which institutes were ranked. The number increased to six in 2017. For 2018, three more categories were added to the list.
Meanwhile, at the event for unveiling the rankings for 2018, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said that it would be mandatory for public institutes to participate in the ranking framework from next year. “And, those public institutions which will not take part in it will face fund cut,” he said.
