JAMMU, Apr 8: Deliberating upon the important aspect of time management as an effective remedy in the case of extreme cardiac events, Dr. Sushil Sharma, HoD Cardiology, GMC today conducted a day long camp in the precincts of Sant Nirankari Satsang Bhawan, Shastri Nagar. More than 500 people were screened and advised during the camp. Clinical and lab evaluation like ECG, Blood sugar and Lipid Evaluation were done and free medicines were distributed as per the requirement.
While interacting with the people, Dr Sushil stated that in cities these days, a little awareness is seen among the people who are quickly reporting to the doctors in times of cardiac attacks.
“In rural areas, the patients are suffering a lot due to lack of immediate treatment and transportation to a well-equipped hospital. As a result, heart attacks are causing life-threat ening problems for them. Intensity of pain is not the criterion for assessing severity of heart attack. The golden rule is that such a patient should be brought to a hospital which has a cath lab without losing time. After a heart attack, the blocked coronary artery needs to be reopened quickly by either fibrinolysis (“clot-busting” drugs) or primary percutaneous coronary intervention (primary PCI), which aims to open the artery using balloons and stents. He said that if primary angioplasty was done immediately, there would be no damage to heart muscle” he added.
Dr Sushil elaborated on the different types of delays responsible for the mortality among heart attack patients and how to handle them viz., “patient delay” is the delay from the onset of chest pain or symptoms to when a call is made to emergency medical services, and can only really be reduced by better public education about heart attacks.
Other who were instrumental in this endeavour included Dr Anitipal Singh , Dr Chakshu Mahajan ,Dr Kewal Sharma, Dr Hardeep Singh, Dr Mohan Lal Menia and S P Verma (Padma Shri). Paramedics and Volunteers, who were part of the team included, Vivak Arya, Ashish Sharma, Vikas Kumar, Raghav Rajput, Rohit Kataria, Harsh Dev Singh, Bhanu Pratap Singh, Akshay Kumar, Nitish Gupta, Ankush Kohli, Suresh Baigra, Amandeep Singh, Rajeev Vohra and Raj Kumar.
