JAMMU, Apr 19: There seems no end to the series of strikes in the Jammu University where no class work was held for the second day today due to the token protest by Jammu University Teachers Association while on the other hand, the students also resumed their fast unto death for removal of the incumbent Dean Students Welfare.
Five students, including two females began their fast unto day death this morning in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s Secretariat. These students, including Abhinandan Sharma, Abhishek Sharma, Pankaj Menia, Sabaa Ateeq and Pinki Rathore sat on indefinite hunger strike in support of the demands, particularly removal of Prof Satnam Kour as Dean Students Welfare.
They are also demanding free Wi-Fi facility in the university, round the clock food facility in the hostels, installation of CCTV cameras in the hostel for security reasons, etc.
It may be recalled that the students had suspended their indefinite hunger strike on April 12 following an assurance given by the Divisional Commissioner in the presence of Vice-Chancellor Prof R D Sharma for conceding their demand of removing Prof Satnam Kour as DSW.
However, despite the lapse of six days, no order has been issued by the University administration for transfer of Prof Satnam Kour and thus we had no option other than to resume out indefinite hunger strike, said Abhinandan Sharma, who is leading the agitation.
Meanwhile, the class work in Jammu University remained suspended for the second day on the call given  by JUTA, which had announced the same for Wednesday and Thursday in protest against April 12 incident when the members of JU Negotiation Committee were gheraoed and virtually locked by protest students.
After a day long protest today, the JUTA decided to continue suspension of class work on Friday also and further course action would be decided tomorrow.
This morning, the JUTA members, led by president Prof K S Charak also held a token protest dharna near the Vice-Chancellor’s Secretariat and raised slogans for the protection, dignity and honour of the teachers.
“For the some time now, a handful of persons have been disrupting the functioning of Jammu University and taking recourse of violent methods and in the prevailing anarchy, it is not possible for the teachers to work,” said the JUTA president announcing that class work remain suspended tomorrow also.
