Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 10: Symposium and rallies marked observance of Human Rights Day across the State. J&K Human Rights Watch celebrated Human Rights Day at its headquarters, in which activists threw light on the importance of the day. State chairman, JKHRW in his speech said that human rights are the sign and power of democratic set up. Among others present were Viney Gupta, Deepak Kapoor, Surinder Singh, Jatinder Singh, Assad Chowdhary, Sheetal, etc. District Information Centre, Udhampur in collaboration with Kalra College of Education organised a symposium on “Human Rights in a Democratic Country”, in which students participated actively. On the occasion, Principal of the host college Aman Kalra was the chief guest. In the symposium, Ridhi Dutta was adjudged as best speaker, while Soni and Roshni bagged second and third positions respectively. Rekha and Shivali were awarded with consolation prizes. To mark Human Rights Day, Shrimati Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies, Model Institute of Education and Research (MIER) organised a lecture cum demonstration programme on “Self Defence Techniques”. DySP Albina Mallik, DySP Javed Ahmed and Inspector Kuldeep Handoo were the resource persons. Dr Renu Gupta, Principal and Director, MIER presided over the function. On the occasion, the ladies Battalion of the sports wing of armed forces/ law and order gave the demonstration of Self Defence Techniques. The programme was conducted under the guidance of ADGP Armed Forces, Law and Order K Rajendra and IGP Jammu Dilbagh Singh. In connection with World Human Rights Day, Women Development Cell of Government Degree College (Boys) Udhampur in collaboration with Centre for Women Studies, University of Jammu organised a one-day seminar. On the occasion, a certificate course in communication skills sponsored by Department of Lifelong Learning, Jammu University was also inaugurated. Dr Poonam Dhawan, Director, Centre for Women Studies, University of Jammu was the chief guest, while Dr Nutan K Resutra, Principal presided over the function. The resource persons were Mahender Sharma, Additional District Session Judge, Udhampur, Dr Vishav Raksha, Associate Prof of Sociology, JU, Dr Savita Nayyar, Department of Law, JU and Nissar Hussain Shah, Sher-e-Kashmir Police Academy, Udhampur. Government Degree College (GDC), Rajouri organised a rally on “Human Rights” today. Principal Dr Mushtaq Ahmed Lone flagged off the rally in presence of Prof HS Isher, Prof Abdul Raouf, Prof Shamim Ahmed, Prof Riaz Ahmed, Prof Abdul Karim and Prof Nahim-un-Nisa, NSS Programme officers in which NSS volunteers carrying banners and placards participated. Government Degree College (GDC), Thanna Mandi observed Human Rights Day with fervour and gaiety. On the occasion, students and faculty members carrying pla-cards and banners took out a rally from the college premises to Tehsil Office, Thanna Mandi. Dr MB Magray, Principal of the college while speaking threw light on the importance of the day. Dr Shakeel Ahmed Raina and Prof Sheikh Mohd Arif also expressed their views. Bhartiya College of Education, Udhampur in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority organised one-day seminar on “Observance of Human Right’s Day”. Principal Prof Sukham Chand in his speech implored upon the students to create a society where everyone is equal. On the occasion, Advocate Yog Raj and Advocate Ved Raj Sharma were the key speakers, who while speaking motivated the students to raise their voice against human rights violation. In order to create awareness about the human rights among the people and advocate the enjoyment of human rights by every individual, Human Rights Day was observed by Information Technology Development Youth and Family Welfare and NYKS. An awareness programme on Human Rights Day was also organised by the Information Technology National Development Youth and Family Welfare Club, Poonch in collaboration with Public Peace and Development Foundation at village Chhunan Mendhar. Chief functionary, Information Technology National Development Y&FW Mohd Shafiq Shabnam highlighted the rights of all people including women, youth, persons with disabilities, indigenous people, poor and marginalized. Speak India Environmental Foundation (SIEF) Chairman Sunil Sharma said that universal declaration of human rights came into existence on December 10, 1948 and after that cases of women torture, human trafficking and sexual harassment were still going on. He said this during a press conference and demanded to introduce the subject of human rights from the school level to onwards as a compulsory subject, so that coming general will could be made aware about their Fundamental Rights. Naresh Kumar, executive member, Rohit Sharma, coordinator, library cum book bank, Viney, Sumit, Manoj also expressed their views. On the occasion of Human Rights Day a memorandum was submitted to United Nations Observer Group here today by Movement for Justice for Refugees of 1947 from PoK led by J S Sudan its convener. It alleged that the refugees are deliberately deprived of their properties in clear violation of Article 17 (b) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights despite the fact that PoK is an integral part of the State. It further said that various committees have been constituted which stressed on redressal of grievances of the refugees but no action has been taken from the Government till date.
