Girl killed, 2 hurt in blast

SRINAGAR, Dec 12: A girl was killed while two others were critically injured in a powerful explosion in the forests of Lolab in the frontier district of Kupwara this afternoon when they were collecting firewood.
Police said that the girls were collecting firewood from the forests of Shahabad, Varnov in Lolab area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district when an unknown explosive went off killing one girl and injuring two others.
The dead girl has been identified as Nuzhat alias Lovely, 17, daughter of Ghulam Mohammad Shah, her sister Shiasta and another girl Kulsooma daughter of Sulaim Shah were injured in the explosion. All the three girls belong to village Shahabad, Varnov Lolab in district Kupwara.
The two injured girls have been removed to Kupwara hospital for treatment where from they were shifted to Srinagar for treatment.
This is the second explosion that took place in Kupwara in past two days in which the firewood collecting women became victims.
One Afroza Begum, 27, wife of Abdul Majid Magray of village Keegam was injured yesterday in an explosion. She was collecting firewood in the forest area when an unknown explosive device went off injuring her critically. The forest area where she was collecting firewood is adjacent to the Army headquarters of Kupwara based 28-Division.
Afroza was critically injured in the explosion and was immediately removed to District Hospital Kupwara for treatment. After assessing the gravity of her injuries she was shifted to Srinagar’s SKIMS hospital for treatment.
