JAMMU, Dec 12: The Border Security Force (BSF) today recovered about Rs 14.5 lakh worth fake Indian currency at forward village of Kharkola in RS Pura sector even as a high level Commandant level flag meeting was held between BSF and Rangers at Ballard, the second one in past four days, at Ballad Post in Ramgarh sector of Samba district today to resolve the issue of firing and ceasefire violations by the Rangers.
Official sources said the BSF jawans of 122 battalion detected packets of currency lying between Pillar Nos. 812 and 813 at Post No. 15 in forward area of Kharkola of RS Pura sector at 5 pm today. The BSF jawans recovered the currency, which was around Rs 14.5 lakh.
The currency was fake, sources said, adding that it was in the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1000.
The currency was found close to the International Border (IB). Sources said the currency might have been thrown from across the IB into Indian territory either by the Rangers or by the militants and narcotics smugglers, which had to be picked up by some couriers on this side during the night.
However, before the couriers could lay their hands on the currency, the alert BSF jawans seized it.
The BSF jawans, who were maintaining a high alert all along the IB, conducted searches in the area but couldn’t spot any suspicious movement.
Senior BSF officers visited the spot after recovery of the currency for investigations.
Police officers said a case would be registered in the recovery of fake currency only after it was handed over to them by the BSF. Efforts would be made to ascertain identity of likely recipients of the currency.
Meanwhile, a Commandant level flag meeting was held today between BSF and Rangers at Ballad Post in Ramgarh sector for about one hour from 12 noon to discuss the issue of frequent incidents of firing and ceasefire violations by the Rangers.
The BSF was represented by Mukesh Tyagi, Commandant 59 battalion BSF while Raja Aijaz, Wing Commander of 24 PNR attended the meeting from the Rangers’ side.
Sources said the BSF lodged strong protest over firing by the Rangers at Arnia, Hiranagar and Ramgarh sectors on the IB recently. The Rangers, as usual, shifted blame of firing on the BSF.
It may be mentioned here that a Company Commander level flag meeting was held between BSF and Rangers four days back in which it was decided to hold the Commandant level meeting.
It may be mentioned here that the Rangers had resorted to firing at Arnia, Hiranagar and Ramgarh sectors recently targeting forward posts. The BSF had been installing high mast lights in some areas of the IB to raise visibility during the night and prevent infiltration by the militants.
