JAMMU, Apr 27: Supreme Court Collegium has recommended Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar and Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir as Chief Justices of Manipur and Meghalaya High Courts respectively.
At present Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar is Acting Chief Justice of J&K High Court while as Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir is First Puisne Judge.
The office of the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court had fallen vacant recently on the retirement of Justice Abhilasha Kumari. Consequently, the working strength of Judges of Manipur High Court had reduced to two against the total sanctioned strength of 5.
Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar is the senior-most judge from Madras High Court and is presently working in J&K High Court. “Having regard to all relevant factors, the Collegium finds Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar suitable in all respects for being appointed as Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court”, read the resolution.
While making the recommendation, the Collegium has also taken into consideration the fact that for quite some time there has been no Chief Justice from Madras High Court which is one of the largest High Courts in the country.
SC Collegium further observed that the office of the Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court had fallen vacant recently on retirement of Justice Tarun Agarwala and consequently the working strength of Judges stands reduced to only one against the total sanctioned strength of 4.
Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir is the senior-most Judge from Jammu & Kashmir High Court and has been serving since his elevation as a Judge of High Court in November 2007.
While making this recommendation, the Collegium has taken into consideration the fact that for quite some time there has been no Chief Justice from Jammu & Kashmir High Court.
