Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu has very rightly advocated for the need of our rural areas to have medical facilities for which he has articulated the policy adoption of mandatorily posting of MBBS graduates in the country’s hinterland.
In this connection, a cue can be rightly taken from the Country’s top Public Sector Banks who, as a policy matter for effecting promotions of officers from Junior Management Grade to Middle Management Grade, have made it a prerequisite to complete a posting of minimum three years in a rural area and equal number of years in a semi urban area. Certain Banks even make it compulsory for effecting internal promotions from clerical to junior officers’ category. In the same pattern, the MBBS Graduates must necessarily be posted, at least, once in their career for three years minimum, to serve and stay in a rural area of our country.
The Vice President impressed upon “all stake holders” in the Health Sector for providing effective health care facilities in the rural areas and to effectively tackle rural – urban divide in this regard. He was addressing 8th Convocation of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in New Delhi recently.
In spite of inducting of fresh batches into the medical fraternity every year, increasing the seats in medical colleges and opening of more medical colleges, a shortage of Doctors is felt everywhere but in the rural areas, the position is pathetic . The aim and mission of a Doctor to serve the suffering Humanity must on its own make volunteer options for rural posting at least once in the career, otherwise also the need is to make it mandatory by the Government.
