Directorate of ULBs starts door to door garbage collection in Katra

JAMMU, May 8: As a significant step towards making the towns and cities cleaner, Directorate of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) Jammu has started the facility of garbage collection from doorstep in Katra town covering both residential and commercial localities.
Director Urban Local Bodies Sushma Chauhan informed that this door to door sanitation service for garbage collection in Katra town has started receiving encourage response from the people. “The results are encouraging enough to replicate the same model to other Municipal towns of Jammu region as well”, she said.
She further said that a robust mechanism of checks and balances will be imposed so that the newly introduced system of door to door collection remains self sustainable and does not impose any additional financial burden on the Municipal Committees. “Duly notified monthly sanitation fees shall be charged from various categories of user/municipal waste generators”, she added.
Chief Executive Officer of Municipal Committee Katra said that the Committee aspires to achieve the status of cleanest city in the State and subsequently in the country as it is also home to lakhs of pilgrims. He further said that various options of people’s participation will be explored in order to make the project a mega success.
Before the launch of the scheme dustbins were also distributed to all the households, he further said.
It is expected that the door to door collection of municipal waste will reduce littering of streets and wards by 60 to 70% and after the scheme is launched systematically in all 36 ULBs, there will be a sea change in the sanitation scenario of urban areas.
