JAMMU, May 13: Coordinator, Gandhi Peace Foundation Jammu Chapter Dr Seema Rohmetra and Co-Coordinator Dr Sapna Sangra attended training workshop on Mahatma Gandhi Revisiting Gandhi organized by the Department of History, Kishinchand Chellaram College (KC), Mumbai, in collaboration with the Sewagram Collective.
Dr Sudarshan Iyengar, former Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith, was main resource person along with Dr Ravindra RP, Pradeep Khelulkar and Vijay Tambe of the Sewagram Collective.
Dr Iyenger conducted the entire workshop through story telling and brought forth the entire evolutionary transformation of Mohan into Mahatma. Through the story of Mahatma Gandhi, he stressed upon the dire need for self reflection and self introspection in the contemporary era of globalization and consumerism.
Dr Sudarshan Iyengar used three basic books written by Gandhi Ji—My Experiments with Truth, Hind Swaraj and Letters from Yeravda Prison as the foundation for revisiting and understanding Gandhi Ji.
The other three resource persons shared their insights about Gandhian thoughts and their experiences in the field of social activism. They dealt with the current controversies and debates related to Father of Nation.
During the workshop, a special session was taken by Tushar Gandhi, great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. He reflected upon how he internalized as a child the experiences of life through his ancestors. He also dwelled upon the various issues raised in his book “Let’s Kill Gandhi”.
A group of thirty participants attended the course who were drawn from different streams, including students, scholars and teachers.
Tulsi Somaiya, a senior activist of Bombay Sarvoday Mandal also took a session wherein he interacted with the participants and discussed the work done by Bombay Sarvoday Mandal in popularizing the thoughts of Gandhi Ji in the society. He also gave information about the course on Gandhi Ji conducted by the Mandal for the prisoners and its positive effect on them.
Jayant Diwan, President of Bombay Sarvoday Mandal gave a talk on Champaran Satyagraha.
Dr Hemlata Bagla, Principal, KC College inaugurated the course and stressed upon the need for such academic endeavours to deeply understand the personalities who have immensely contributed to the humanity at large.
Vice Principals Smarajit Padhi, Dr Shalini Sinha, HoD History, Dr Sandhya Iyer and the teachers of KC College were also present.
Dr Shyam Pakhare, Assistant Professor, Department of History, KC College was the coordinator of the course.
