Attempt to tear quota Bill copy in LS, Sonia in action

NEW DELHI, Dec 19:
The Lok Sabha today witnessed high drama as Congress president Sonia Gandhi had to physically intervene to prevent a copy of the Bill for SC/ST promotion in quota being torn down by a member of the Samajawadi Party which had been disrupting proceedings of of the House in protest against the Bill for the last three days.
The resulting commotion saw the House being adjourned for the day.
As soon as the House re-assembled at 1500 hrs after three adjournments, Speaker Meira Kumar asked Minister of State in the PMO V Narayansamy to move the Bill for consideration.
The SP members had by this time gathered in the well of the House and started sloganeering against the move to give reservatioN to SC/ST in promotion in Government jobs.
While, Mr Narayasamy was in the proceess of presentiung the Bill, already passed by the Rajya Sabha, for consideration of the Lower House, one SP Member Yashvir Singh rushed up to the Minister and snatched away his copy of the Bill.
Within no time, Ms Gandhi swung into action. She left her seat and caught hold of the SP Member, triggering strong reaction from his party.
Meanwhile, Mr Vilas Muttemwar of the ruling Congress also reached in the well and tried to push away the SP members.Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath too was seen in the well in an agitated  mood.
Soon other Ministers also left their seats and reached near  Ms Gandhi.
Members from other parties too were up on their feet.
The Opposition BJP members started protesting against the goings on in the House.
The House was thrown into complete commotion and it did not take Ms Kumar long to announce that the proceedings were being suspended for the day.
Earlier, the House had seen three adjournments over the SC/ST quota in promotion in government jobs- one each during the Question and Zero Hour and the third one at 1500 hrs as the SP Members  gathered in the well and start sloganeering against the Bill.
On the other hand, the BSP Members made equally vociferous demands for early passage of the Bill.
The issue of women security and adequate Minimum Support Price for farmers too found a forceful echo in the House during the day.
Women MPs belonging to the Opposition NDA protested in the well of the House demanding security in the wake of the Delhi bus gangrape incident of Sunday. (UNI)
