Sir,
This is in reference to article ” Restore lost sheen of Poonch ” by Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat ( Excelsior 12th June 2018). Improper Solid Waste Management is a very serious issue for the world and J&K state is also facing its great threat. The Government instead of investing huge funds on creating unnecessary infrastructure must allocate good amount of funds for waste management and sanitation services. Under district plan hardly 2 to 4 lakhs are available for the waste management in each district of state plus some funds are allocated now under Swach Bharat Mission (SBM) from last 2 to 3 years. In this scenario what can we expect ? In view of location of Poonch city on the banks of river, authorities should have ensured to create a separate landfill site for this town. Right now all the garbage is dumped on the banks of Poonch river which is carried away in floods thus polluting its pristine waters. At least the District administration Poonch must immediately stop dumping of Biomedical waste near the river bank by local District Hospital . Infact this issue was taken up seriously by Toursim Minister during the recent District Development Board Meeting held at Poonch few weeks back. Municipal Committee Poonch must start collecting garbage from individual households in a segregated manner which is mandated under Waste Management Rules of 2016.
