JAMMU, June 18: Two girls died today due to drowning in Jhajjar Nallah in Jhajjar Kotli area following heavy rains in upper reaches while three children were rescued and search for another was still on.
According to the reports, six minor girls were taking bath in Jhajjar Nallah this evening when due to heavy rains in upper reaches, the water level in the nallah suddenly increased and in the resultant flash flood, all the children were washed away.
On getting reports of washing away of the children in the flash flood, police teams from police Station Jhajjar Kotli and locals rushed to the spot and started rescued operation. After hectic efforts of locals and police officials, three girls were rescued alive with minor injuries while two others were found dead and one child was still missing and efforts were on to locate her.
The girls who were rescued alive were identified as Vandana Devi (13) daughter of Baldev Raj, resident of Sheranjal (Dansal), Radhika Devi (4) daughter of Ravi Kumar of Sheranjal and Bharti Bhagat (9) daughter of Brij Mohan of Otta (Dansal).
Those who died in the flash flood were Nanita Bhagat (4) daughter of Brij Mohan of Otta (Dansal) and Niharika Devi (8) daughter of Ravi Kumar of Batal (Nagrota) while one child who was still missing was identified as Chandan Jyoti (6) daughter of Brij Mohan, resident of Otta (Dansal).
The bodies of the deceased girls were handed over to their legal heirs while those who were rescued were hospitalized for treatment of their injuries.
