JAMMU, Dec 20: Authorities have mooted a proposal for partial one way traffic on two most congested roads of the City including Ambphalla-Janipura and Jewel Chowk-Canal after the commissioning of fourth bridge on river Tawi in the month of March next year. The decision was aimed at preventing choking of both the roads most of the times due to heavy load of traffic including the VIP movement.
Official sources told the Excelsior that all agencies including civil, police and traffic etc were finding it difficult to look a way out to ease huge traffic congestion on the two very busy roads, where rush of vehicles has been increase with every passing day leading to massive traffic jams on various occasions and causing enormous inconvenience to commuters.
“After looking at various options and solutions, we have worked out a viable plan to control traffic problem on the busy road of Ambphalla-Janipura and Jewel Chowk-Canal road by partially making them one way roads after the commissioning of fourth bridge on river Tawi, which was being constructed near the site of Bapu Asaram Ashram”, sources said.
As per the proposal, all commercial vehicles including buses, matadors and load carriers minus private vehicles and three wheelers coming from Satwari, Ware House, Railway Station and other such areas beyond Vikram Chowk would be diverted to new Tawi bridge. From Canal Road, the vehicles bound for Janipura, Bantalab, Kot Bhalwal, Gharota etc would take Tope Sherkhanian, Paloura and Barnai roads for their onward journey.
Similarly, the commercial vehicles of Jewel Chowk-Canal road would directly reach ahead of Canal Road after taking approach road of the new bridge. They too would have to take the bridge from Ware House and Bikram Chowk routes.
Admitting that commuters traveling through matadors for some routes could face problems in proposed one way traffic, sources said there was no other option left for movement of the vehicles.
“The commuters would have to spend extra time in the vehicles due to lengthy routes but they had to adjust it as it was largely becoming impossible to run the traffic on these two busy roads especially during the peak hours and other busy timings”, sources said.
They, however, added that the two roads would remain open both ways for private vehicles and three wheelers and only commercial vehicles would be diverted to other routes for one-way traffic.
“We have worked out a plan including diversion of heavy and commercial vehicles to ensure one way traffic on the two roads. Hopefully, we would be able to implement the proposal with the commissioning of fourth bridge on river Tawi”, sources said, adding that trials would be conducted for about a week on the two roads after fully implementing the proposal.
Sources said the commercial vehicles including matadors etc could take Tope Sherkhanian, Paloura, Roop Nagar, Barnai and other approach roads from Canal road as per their convenience and then drop the passengers of Ambphalla-Janipura routes on return i.e. while moving from Roop Nagar or Bantalab towards Janipura.
The matadors bound for Bantalab, Gharota and Bhalwal etc would move from Roop Nagar onwards. “This would shift a lot of burden of matadors and other commercial vehicles on Ambphalla-Janipura road. Similarly, Jewel Chowk-Canal Road stretch would also be de-congested with shifting of heavy and commercial vehicles from Ware House and Bikram Chowk to fourth Tawi bridge and then using approach road, which would land them beyond Canal road”, sources said expressing confidence that the proposal would prove successful and de-congest traffic to best possible extent on both roads.
According to sources, various other options to de-congest traffic on these two roads were discussed by the authorities but they didn’t materialize due to various factors.
