JAMMU, June 29: In recognition of the notable contribution made by Late Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the field of Economics, Planning and Statistics Development in the post independence era, his birth anniversary on June 29 is celebrated as ‘Statistics Day”at national level.

The National Sample Survey Office (Field Operation Division), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, Government of India, Regional Office, Jammu, also celebrated the 12th Statistics Day, here today. Officers from regional office, NSSO (FOD) Jammu, Sub Regional Office, Udhampur, Officers of Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Govt of J&K, Associate Professor and some Research Scholars of Department of Statistics, University of Jammu, participated in the Statistics Day. The theme for the Statistics Day was “Quality Assurance in Official Statistics”
Speaking on the occasion, Amitjyoti Roy, Deputy Director General, NSSO (FOD) Jammu, presented a brief life sketch of Prof P C Mahalanobis. He spoke about the importance of “Quality Assurance in Official Statistics” in the economic development of our country. He appealed to the general masses of the J&K State to extend full cooperation to the field functionary of NSSO (FOD), Government of India and Directorate of Economics & Statistics, J&K Government to provide them accurate and correct data, which is used by the Centre as well as State Government in development of planning, policy formulation and building good governance of the country.
Kishore Kumar, Director, MOSPI, gave a detailed lecture on the theme of “Statistics Day”.
P N Pandita and B S Bhan, Assistant Directors, NSSO (FOD), Govt of India, Jammu, also spoke on the topic “Quality Assurance in Official Statistics”. Other officers who spoke on the occasion include, Dr H R Sharma, Neeta Sharma, Rajesh Kumar, R K Arora and Mritunjay Kumar. . Parmil Kumar, Associate Professor and some research scholars, Department of Statistics, JU, also spoke on the theme of 12th Statistics Day, 2018.
A documentary film on the life of late Prof P C Mahalanobis and different surveys conducted by the NSSO (FOD), Govt of India, was shown to the participants.
The participants, who delivered their lectures on the theme of 12th Statistics Day 2018, were presented honorarium by Amitjyoti Roy, Deputy Director General, NSSO (FOD), Jammu. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by P N Pandita, Assistant Director NSSO (FOD), Jammu.
