This is in reference to “Dearth of Landfill sites” by Raja Muzaffar Bhat (Excelsior 6.7.2018). It is not only Kashmir valley which has very less land availability for landfill sites but Jammu also sails in the same boat. If we take Jammu city we have less plain area where we have land availability and all this has been occupied.
We have either residential colonies or shopping complexes on these plain areas. The rest of the areas where we have availability of land is located on hilly areas. It is not at all advisable to have landfill sites created on hills and Government especially Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) must start decentralizing these landfills. I would suggest to collect waste in a segregated manner and organic waste be processed inside various colonies itself. This will reduce the amount of waste on the landfills.
