National Seminar on “Higher Education in J&K” commences

JAMMU, Dec 22: Two-day National Seminar on “Higher Education in J&K: Challenges and Perspectives” organized by Department of Social Sciences, Government Degree College, Kathua in collaboration with Indian Council of Social Science Research North-Western Regional Centre Panjab University, Chandigarh commenced today.
The seminar was inaugurated by Abdul Gani Malik, Minister for Higher Education, Labour and Employment, who was the chief guest, in presence of Lal Singh, Member of Parliament, Udhampur-Kathua Constituency, who presided over the function.
Prof Nater Singh Principal, GDC Kathua, presented the welcome address and mentioned various areas which needs to be focused like expansion of higher education institution, Provision of equal access to all the social groups, quality and excellence, relevance, value based education.
The keynote address was read out by Prof Sachidanand Sinha, JNU, New Delhi.
On the occasion, copy of the abstract of the seminar was released by the Abdul Gani Malik and others.
In his address, Lal Singh stressed on the importance of enhancing primary education in order to provide quality higher education.
Abdul Gani Malik detailed about the role of higher education, role of private sector in meeting the need of higher education, need to minimize the rural and urban divide in education.
Among others present were Prof Unita Sinha, DU, Prof Nellu Rohmetra, Rector Kathua Campus, Prof Dipankar Sengupta, Head, Department of Economics, University of Jammu, Prof Sucheta Pathania, Department of English University of Jammu, Dr NK Gupta, Principal, GDC Bani, Shehnaz Akhter, Deputy Labour Commissioner, prominent citizens.
Dr CP Sharma presented vote of thanks.
The technical session of the seminar started after the inaugural function.
