JAMMU, Aug 2: Taking lead to eradicate drug menace from the society, Gandhi Nagar and Digiana police under ‘Operation Sanjeevani’ foiled smuggling of poppy straw from Srinagar to Punjab by arresting two persons.
As per police sources, on specific information, a joint team from Police Station Gandhi Nagar and Police Post Digiana laid a naka near Digiana and asked two pedestrians to stop for checking as they were moving under suspicious circumstances.
On seeing police cops approaching towards them, the duo escaped from the spot and entered into a by lane. Stinking something fishy, the cops caught them after a brief chase.
During checking, police recovered 14 kilograms of poppy straw from the possession of these persons and arrested them.
The arrested persons have been identified as Lakhvinder Singh, son of Kashmir Singh of District Taran Taran Punjab and Rinku Singh, son of Kewal Singh of Tehsil Baba Bakala, Amritsar Punjab.
During preliminary questioning, the accused disclosed that after brining the poppy straw from Srinagar used to sell the consignment among the youth in Punjab and Jammu. With their arrest, police foiled their bid to smuggle the consignment to Punjab and also saved the youth from becoming drug addicts.
A case under FIR Number 171/18 under Section 8/15 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Police Station Gandhi Nagar and investigation started.
Police team led by SHO Gandhi Nagar Inspector Sunil Singh Jasrotia and assisted by Incharge Police Post Digiana SI Kali Charan foiled the smuggling bid and made the arrest under the supervision of SDPO South Mohammad Rafiq Manhas, Incharge SP South Vinay Kumar and SSP Jammu Vivek Gupta.
