JAMMU, Dec 26: State Branch of Gandhian Global Family (GGF) today organized a felicitation function at Gandhi Nagar to honour reputed social worker Nighat Shafi Pandit, who was recently conferred the National Jamna Lal Bajaj Award-2012.
Mrs Pandita has been awarded for her outstanding work for development and welfare of women and children in the State.
Minister of State for Power, Tourism and CA&PD, Shabir Ahmed Khan, was the chief guest on the occasion, while president GGF Padam Shree, S. P. Verma was also present on the occasion.
The function among others was attended by a large number of GGF members, including General, J. S. Jamwal (Retd), former chairman, PSC, Mohammad Shafi Pandit, Shakuntala Joshi, Jaman Lal, Prabha Jain, Prof. Indira Rathore, Abida, Haji Ghulam Nabi Ganai, Zahoor Ahmed and Layzing Tsring besides representatives of NGOs.
The Minister appreciated Nighat Pandit’s outstanding social work which she rendered for empowerment of women and welfare of children in the State, especially during turmoil period.
The Minister said that Nighat Pandit has been working predominantly and extensively in rural communities of Kashmir and Jammu region. He said in the politically charged environment of Kashmir in those days, she has carved out a space for humanitarian work that is not aligned to the Government or separatist groups.
