Ex-deputy prosecutor of Moscow region still in Polish prison.

WARSAW, Dec 28: Ex-first deputy prosecutor of the Moscow region Alexander lgnatenko detained in Poland a year ago on charges of favouring illegal gambling and receiving bribes, remains in a Polish prison, Bogdan Kijak, the press secretary of the district court of the city of Novy-Sonch, which handles the case, said.
“He is so far in Poland. The date of the extradition has not yet been fixed. The negotiations continue,” he said.
It was reported earlier that Ignatenko might have been extradited to Russia before the New Year’s Eve.
However, according to Kijak, the situation is unlikely to change in the two working days of the outgoing year.
The Polish section of Interpol that now deals with the case is to coordinate with the Russian side the terms and date of Alexander lgnatenko’s extradition.
The details of the negotiations and their results will not be revealed for security reasons.
Former deputy prosecutor of the Moscow region Alexander Ignatenko charged in Russia with fraud and corruption was detained in Poland on an international arrest warrant on January 1, 2012 and was held in a Polish prison for nearly a year while the decision to extradite him was considered.
In late October, the Polish justice minister announced the decision on the extradition of Alexander Ignatenko to Russia to stand trial only on charges of corruption, as the Polish justice minister refuses his extradition for a trial for fraud.
According to international law, a country that extradites a detainee can impose such restrictions if it doubts the validity of the charges. (agencies)
