BANGALORE, Dec 29:
The Special Lokayukta Court today convicted Dr Chandrashekar, a Government Health Officer, after finding him guity of a bribery charge.
He was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for eight months and to pay a fine of Rs 3,000. If defaulted to pay the amount, he should undergo further simple imprisonment for three months.
Under a different section, he was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for one year and to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 and in default to pay fine, to undergo further simple imprisonment for four months. Both sentence would run concurrently.
M Nagaraju, a city resident, had filed a complaint on December three, 2005 to Bangalore City Lokayukta police that Chandrashekar, the then Health Officer and K Ramanathan, Health Inspector, Bharathinagar Range, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, Bangalore, demanded from him bribe amount of Rs 8,000 and Rs 2,000, respectively, to transport garbage in three city wards.
On December three, 2005, a trap was laid and Chandrashekar and Ramanathan were caught red-handed while accepting bribe.
After completing the investigation, the Investigating Officer and Police Inspector M G Subbarao, filed the charge-sheet against the accused before the Special Judge, Prevention of Corruption Act, Bangalore Urban District.
After the trial, the Special Judge convicted Chandrashekar, while Ramanathan was acquitted from the charges. (PTI)
