Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, May 3:

The Traffic Police Department is going to kick-start the operation of traffic signals in the Srinagar city as five traffic signals would be inaugurated with the reopening of Durbar Move offices on May 7. The department would receive shot in the arm as 200 more traffic police men are set to join the department from coming Monday. This was disclosed by Deputy Inspector of General (DIG) Traffic-Kashmir, Shafqat Ali Wattali during a media interaction. He said that 35 spots have been identified where traffic signals would be set up during the next two months, adding that this would streamline the traffic system in the city. “The operation of the traffic signal system would ease the traffic pressure in the city. However, it is important that people cooperate with the department. They should obey the traffic signals and not violate them. The traffic signals would be installed at some of the important intersections and hopefully the situation on the traffic front would improve,” said the DIG. He said that the lack of human resource is one of the impediments in better management and enforcement of the traffic regulations. He said that 200 more personnel would be added to the traffic police department on May 7, and this would make a lot of difference. The DIG said that volume of traffic has increased in the Kashmir valley over the past few years. He said that a proper and effective system should be in place for better management of the traffic system in the valley. He added that departments like Roads and Buildings, Srinagar Development Authority, Srinagar Municipal Corporation and Transport too have role to play in better management of traffic. “The guidelines and policies framed by these departments are never followed. The municipal laws are being trampled during construction of the commercial and residential complexes. No action whatsoever is taken against these violators and the whole blame is shifted on the traffic police department,” he said. Mr Wattali said that the department has launched a page on the facebook and that a website would soon be launched. He said people should register a complaint on the facebook page adding that action would be taken against the violators. He said people can also upload the photos of violation on the page so that quick action is taken.
