JAMMU, Sept 12: Akhnoor Sports Club today organized a function to pay rich tributes to Shaheed Lieutenant Thakur Das Sharma on his 54th martyrdom day.
Rajiv Sharma, MLA Akhnoor, was the chief guest while SDM Akhnoor, Gopal Singh, was the guest of honour. The MLA paid floral tributes to the martyr soldier by garlanded his memorial, which was followed by National Anthem. Two minute silence was observed praying for peace to the noble soul of the martyr.
Speaking on the occasion, the MLA recalled how Lt Thakur Dass Sharma laid his life for the nation while defending Indian territory in Kalidhar sector during 1965 Indo-Pak war. He said that Thakur was a valiant commissioned army officer and a good sportsperson. Praising the valiant army officer of Akhnoor, the chief guest exhorted the youth to come forward to defend the borders of the motherland.
Rich tributes were also paid to the martyr by SDM Akhnoor, Munish Anand (SDPO Akhnoor), besides DK Kapoor and SK Sharma, president and general secretary of Akhnoor Sports Club respectively.
Others who paid tributes to the martyr included Nav Rattan Sharma, family members of the martyr, Satya Pal Saraf, Col PL Chaudhary, father of the martyr, Kanta Devi, Capt Jugal Gupta (Retd), members of Executive Body of Akhnoor Sports Club, veteran and contemporary sportspersons of Thakur Dass and prominent citizens of the town.
While extending tribute to the martyr, Col Chaudhary requested the chief guest to raise a common memorial of martyrs of various wars in Akhnoor town with proper maintenance which will be the most befitting tribute to the martyrs of the area instead of erecting memorials in different areas. The chief guest accepted the request and directed SDM Akhnoor to identify suitable land for this purpose.
SK Sharma, Secretary, Akhnoor Sports Club revisited the biography of the martyr to infuse a spirit of patriotism in the youth and reaffirmed his commitment to keep the light of martyrdom burning. Students of various schools sang patriotic songs.
