SRINAGAR, Jan 11: The Meteorological department has issued heavy rain or snow warning at some places over the State in the next 36 hours. The department has forecast that light to moderate rain or snow would occur at many places over the State on January 12.
“A western disturbance is developing over the State and it is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas from the afternoon of January 12 till the afternoon of January 13. Due to this weather system, moderate snowfall over hills/rains (in plains) will occur at most places of Pir Panjal ranges in Kashmir division and at many places over higher reaches of Jammu region and at a few places over Ladakh region,” said Sonam Lotus, Director, Meteorological department in the weather advisory.
Lotus said that some places of Pir Panjal range may receive heavy snowfall on January 12 and 13. During the two days, the day temperature will fall by 4-5 degree Celsius and night temperatures will rise by 1 to 2 degree Celsius.
“Srinagar city is expected to receive light rain/snow on Saturday. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 7 degree Celsius and minus 3 degree Celsius respectively at the summer capital of the State. Jammu city is likely to be hit by light rain/thundershowers. Maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 18 degree Celsius and 6 degree Celsius respectively at Jammu,” said an official of Met department.
Meanwhile, Kargil area in the Ladakh division was the coldest place in the State with the maximum temperature of minus 4.0 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature of minus 18.6 degrees Celsius. Leh, also in Ladakh division was the second coldest place with the maximum temperature of 0.8 degree Celsius and the minimum temperature of minus 17.0 degree Celsius.
Famous ski resort of Gulmarg was the coldest place in the Kashmir valley with the maximum temperature of 1.2 degree Celsius and the minimum temperature of minus 9.0 degree Celsius. Pahalgam, yet another famous ski resort of Kashmir witnessed the maximum temperature of 7.3 degree Celsius and the minimum temperature of minus 8.5 degree Celsius.
Qazigund, considered to be the gateway of Kashmir in South Kashmir recorded the day temperature of 10.1 degree Celsius and the night temperature of minus 4.8 degree Celsius. Kokernag, also in South Kashmir recorded the day temperature of 7.1 degree Celsius and the night temperature of minus 4.1 degree Celsius. Kupwara in North Kashmir was a bit warmer with the maximum temperature of 10.9 degree Celsius and the minimum temperature of minus 3.6 degree Celsius.
Srinagar, the summer capital witnessed a bright day with mellow sunshine. The summer capital recorded the day temperature of 10.2 degree Celsius while as the minimum temperature was recorded as minus 4.0 degree Celsius. Jammu, the winter capital of State recorded the day temperature of 19.0 degree Celsius and the night temperature of 5.2 degree Celsius.
