JAMMU, Jan 12: Lohri was celebrated across Jammu region with fervour and gaiety.
The two-day Lohri-Raghunath Bazar Festival concluded with Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand lighting the traditional fire to mark the end of the celebrations. The festival was organized by the J&K Tourism Department in collaboration with Raghunath Bazar Businessmen Association to showcase the cultural heritage of Jammu.
Tara Chand said that such events showcase the unique and rich cultural heritage of Jammu and attract cultural tourism in the State. He said that Government is promoting diverse tourism activities under which potential destinations are being developed across the State to promote eco, adventure and heritage tourism.
A cultural programme was organized by the MEd students of the Directorate of Distance Education, University of Jammu on the occasion of Lohri festival. Traditional bonfire was lit by Prof Darshana Sharma, coordinator of MEd programme in presence of resource persons and students.
Vinayak Institute of Nursing and Paramedical Sciences also celebrated Lohri. Chairman of the institute AD Singh highlighted the background of Lohri festival. A cultural programme was also presented by the students.
National Conference celebrated Lohri festival at Sher-i-Kashmir Bhawan with great pomp and show. Dr Mustafa Kamaal, additional general secretary was chief guest, who lit the holy fire in presence of Rattan Lal Gupta, provincial president, National Conference and party workers.
Lohri was celebrated at BJP headquarters where party State president Jugal Kishore Sharma, alongwith other leaders performed pooja and Purna Ahuti.
Dogra Brahman Pratinidhi Sabha, Parade celebrated Lohri with great fanfare and zeal. On the occasion, Verinder Magotra, vice president, lit the holy fire in presence of other members of the Sabha.
Freedom Fighter Association celebrated Lohri with the inmates of the SOS Home, Channi Rama. On the occasion, Babu Ram, Joint Commissioner, JMC was the chief guest, while Mohd Saleem Manhas, ARTO, was the guest of honour, who apprised the gathering about the importance of the festival.
Residents of Ward No 53, Trikuta Nagar, under the banner of Trikuta Nagar Welfare Society celebrated Lohri festival with great pomp and show. The general secretary of the society Nitish Mahajan threw light on the importance of the festival. SHO Sameer Jeelnai was the chief guest.
On the eve of Lohri festival, State Bank of India, Jourian organized pensioners’ meet. On the occasion, Retd Colonel BR Sharma, president, Ex-servicemen League was the chief guest, while Captain Rajeshwar Singh was the guest of honour. Satish Sharma, Branch Manager, customers and pensioners were also present. During the meeting, issues related to pensioners and customers were discussed for redressal.
Below Gumat Traders Association, JP Chowk, celebrated Lohri with great pomp and show. On the occasion, president of the association, Gurdarshan Singh lit the holy fire in presence of other members Vinod Sharma, Rinku Gupta, Ravinder Mehra, Kaka and Manpreet Singh.
Various educational institutions of the District Kathua also celebrated Lohri and birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanada. A rally was organized by Vivekananda College of Education, in which students from various institutions of the district participated.
