SRINAGAR, Sept 26: Police today identified one of the killed militants in yesterday’s Sopore encounter as top commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) while massive operation was launched today in the area after inputs about presence of three militants.
Police said that one of the two militants killed in an encounter in Sopore area of North Kashmir has been identified as Abu Maaz of Pakistan who was operating as the top commander of LeT in North Kashmir.
They said that he was active in the area since 2015 and was involved in major militant attacks and killings in Sopore and Handwara areas.
“He was involved in several attacks on the Security Forces and killings of civilians in the area. Several cases were registered against him in different police stations across valley for his terror activities.
In the meantime, security forces today launched an operation in Sopore area of North Kashmir today after inputs about presence of a group of militants in the area.
Source said that a joint team of Army’s 52 RR, Special Operation Group of Police and CRPF sealed Amargarh area this afternoon. House to house searches were conducted in the area. The operation was still going on and security forces have inputs that the militants are still inside the cordoned area. The cordon has been tightened to ensure that the militants may not flee from the area during the night.
