RAMBAN, Sept 29: Massive traffic jam in various areas of the district Ramban on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway for several hours has irked the commuters and people especially children and patients.
Sources said that due to narrow patches along the highway in Magarkote, Battery Chashma and Marog areas after recent landslides, the vehicles on one side are made to stop. Since there are no sufficient number of Traffic Police officials deployed along the highway at the troubled points there, the traffic jams have become the order of the day.
Several commuters from these troubled areas made calls to the EXCELSIOR OFFICE telling that massive traffic jam has been created in Marog, Battery Chashma and Magarkote area since morning and many light, medium and heavy vehicles have been stranded for several hours.
They also alleged that there were no police or traffic cops available at some troubled points to regulate the traffic while general passengers were left to suffer.
“I am going to Kashmir to meet my family. I left from Jammu at 4 am and its 6 pm now, I am able to pass the damaged portion of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway near Marog”, a commuter hailing from District Anantnag said.
Another commuter traveling to Jammu said that jamming on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has become a routine job. Government should take immediate measures to ensure smooth movement of traffic on the highway, he added.
Due to routine traffic jams on the highway right from Nashri to Banihal, the students, employees and patients across District Ramban also suffer.
A senior police official when contacted said that recently large boulders fell down on the highway in various parts of the district Ramban leading to closure of the highway. However, men and machineries were pressed in and the highway was cleared for the traffic movement from both the sides, he added.
“There are some points where two-way traffic is not possible as large patch of highway has been damaged”, he said, adding that the concerned authorities have been asked to expedite work to widen the road at narrow patches for smooth movement of the traffic.
