Kashmir gets relief from weather

SRINAGAR, Jan 14: Kashmir valley witnessed a pleasant day on Monday with both day and night temperatures giving relief to the people from last week’s sub-zero night temperatures. At the same time, the Meteorological Department has predicted that some parts of the State may be hit by snow or rain on Tuesday.
Srinagar, the summer capital of the State recorded the day temperature of 10.7 degrees celsius while as the night temperature was 1.6 degrees celsius. Jammu, the winter capital of the State recorded the day temperature of 19.1 degrees celsius while as the night temperature was recorded as 8.4 degrees celsius.
Kargil area in Ladakh division was the coldest place in the State with the day temperature of 0.2 degrees celsius and the night temperature of minus 16.4 degrees celsius. Leh also in Ladakh division was the second coldest place in the State with the maximum temperature of 5.0 degrees celsius and the minimum temperature of minus 15.2 degrees celsius.
The famous ski resort of Gulmarg in North Kashmir was the coldest place in the Kashmir valley with the maximum temperature of 0.0 degrees celsius and the minimum temperature of minus 8.6 degrees celsius. World famous health resort of Pahalgam in South Kashmir was a bit warmer with the day temperature of 8.0 degrees celsius and the night temperature of 0.0 degrees celsius. Kupwara in North Kashmir had a day temperature of 8.2 degrees celsius and the night temperature of minus 0.3 degrees celsius.
An official of MeT Department said that light rain/snow could occur at isolated places over the State. The official said that sky would be partly cloudy in Srinagar with the maximum and minimum temperatures being around 9 degrees celsius and -2 degrees celsius respectively. He said Jammu would have mainly clear sky with the maximum and minimum temperatures being around 21 degrees celsius and 7 degrees celsius respectively.
It would be in place to mention here that MeT Department has already said that a fresh western disturbance is more than likely to hit the State between January 16 and 18. The department said that under the influence of this western disturbance light to heavy snowfall may be recorded across the State with some of the areas experiencing heavy falls.
The department said that the western disturbance would originated in Arabian Sea and it would be approaching the State through Afghanistan and Pakistan. Kashmir valley witnessed light snowfall during the intervening night of January 11 and 12.
