Teaching is a noble profession and a teacher is known as the pillar of the nation .We ,in India have had great teachers of the stature and intellect of Dr.Radhakrishan ,who have inspired thousands of youngmen and women to join this profession. The Central and State Govts. have instituted awards to appreciate /honour those teachers who make valuable and exceptional contribution to society by rendering exemplary services in the field of education. But the method of identifying the best teachers who could be emulated ,suffers from many flaws .Generally, what happens is that the concerned authorities issue a circular at the eleventh hour to the CEO’s /ZEO’s directing them to submit the files of the teachers for the best teacher award at the Zonal ,District and state level.
Best and extraordinary teachers either don’t receive the requisite information in time or donot tend to submit their files for the coveted award .The method of awarding the real teachers needs to be overhauled .Process for the selection of best teachers should be started at the beginning of the academic session. A committee of veteran and eminent educationalists, preferably retired, should be constituted at Zonal, District and State level to select the most suitable teachers for the award. The teachers to be selected should have their personality traits, classroom interaction, social traits, academic performance, role in promoting cocurricular, sports activities , interaction with the community, relationship with the colleagues /Head of the institution, etc. Such teachers who excel the others in the prescribed criteria must be shortlisted at Zonal and District level .The committee should also elicit the views of the students and the Head of the institutions by interviewing them before conferring the coveted award to the most suitable teacher so that other teachers may derive inspiration from him/her and strive hard to emulate them. The process of identifying such teachers should be comprehensive and exhaustive before recommending the names of such teachers for the award which is presented on the ‘Teachers Day’ i.e.5thSeptember , every year.
