‘NC, PDP taught lesson in ULB polls’

Srinagar, Oct 24: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national general secretary Ram Madhav today said that the regional parties including National Conference (NC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who boycotted the recently held Urban Local Bodies (ULB) polls in Jammu and Kashmir have been taught a lesson.
Madhav said this while speaking at the felicitating function for the winners in ULB polls. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was very happy over BJP victory in Kashmir. “Prime Minister and other senior leaders of the party were very happy when I told him that our party scored a century in Kashmir”, he added.

“I congratulate our leaders who showed courage and made possible for the party to win 106 seats. Victory in Kashmir was very important for our party. You all took part in the elections in extreme situation. Courageous people like you are in the BJP that is why people have elected you”, he said.
The BJP leader said that the two regional parties tried hard to delay the polls further but “authorities went ahead, thus, the parties have been taught a lesson.”
“There were various efforts for not holding elections of local bodies here. Two major local parties of the State pressed for not holding elections but we insisted that leaders in the villages should be given opportunity to carry out development activities and then the Central Government decided to hold the elections”, he said.
The BJP leader said that the two parties who boycotted the recently held polls are a classic example of family rule and they don’t want leadership at grass root level. He said that the people stayed away from the polls due to the fear psychosis created by the two parties.
Madhav said that those who boycotted the elections fielded proxy candidates. “I still congratulate them for their participation in polls indirectly,” he said.
“Every Panchayat will get funds. We want the sum should go directly to the elected Panchs and Sarpanchs. Though the elections are contested on non-party basis, we have to ensure that good candidates come up to usher in development at grass root level,” he added.
“The aim of Narendra Modi, Government and State administration is that the people in the villages should be able to take part in the developmental works themselves. The right of development in your Wards and Municipalities is now in your own hands. We will request the Government to provide the funds directly to the elected local bodies so that they will be able to carry out local developmental activities on their own and will not be dependent on MLAs and the Government. Everyone should now carry forward the development works in a decentralized way”, he added.
