SRINAGAR, Jan 19: Upset with unscheduled power cuts, the residents of Frestbal in saffron town of Pampore today staged protests against the Power Development Depart-ment (PDD).
The protesters blocked the National Highway, connecting summer capital Srinagar with rest of country for half an hour against the PDD for their failure in restoring the power supply to the area since last 20 days.
The residents including women folk, students and traders allege that their transformers were damaged some three weeks back, but have not been repaired and reinstalled at their Colonies so far. “Our repeated pleas to the concerned authorities to restore the electricity supply in the area have fallen on deaf ears, and that is why we came to the roads to block them all,” said the protesters.
The protesters said that the absence of power supply subjected them to immense inconvenience particularly in the evening hours. “The electricity has been cut off from last three weeks and earlier it also was playing hide and seek mostly during the peak hours,” they said.
“Students taking the exams are also badly affected. We cannot prepare for the exams in the absence of electricity,” Amir Farooq, a student said.
The protesters also warned that if the concerned authority fails to restore power supply within days in the area, they will not pay power bills.
The traffic was restored later following assurance from Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) of PDD.
Similar kind of protest was also held on Rambagh Crossing at Airport Road.
