Faulty drainage posing threat to houses

SRINAGAR, Jan 19: The faulty drainage in Rainawari of Srinagar is posing threat to the residential houses and some of them are facing imminent threat of collapse due to the water seepage.
A delegation of residents of Dalkawpora, Chowdhary Bagh and the adjoining localities told Excelsior that some of the houses in these areas have already developed cracks and may crumble any time. They said that casualties cannot be ruled out if a mishap takes place due to the seepage of dirty water in the houses.
“For the last four years we have represented many times before the authorities and requested them to look into our problems, but there is nobody who would listen to us. At least six houses have developed major cracks and these houses may come down any time thus leading to fatal casualties”, said the delegation.
The delegation said that Lakes and Waterways Develop-ment Authority (LAWDA) had promised that a floating sewer would be constructed in the area, adding that same has not been done so far.
The residents said that they cannot construct the drains of their own since there is a ban on the construction in the area on the directions of High Court. The High Court while taking serious note of dumping of sewage and other waster material in the Dal Lake ordered the LAWDA to take measures for scientific disposal of the waste material.
The residents said that due to the absence of proper drainage system people living in areas like Mian Shah Sahib, Jogi Lankar, Gurpora, Dag Mohalla and Hassanabad are depositing sewage and waste material in the Dal Lake.
Vice-Chairman, LAWDA, Irfan Yasin told Excelsior that work on sewage and drainage in the area is being carried out by UEED. Irfan claimed that most of the works have been completed by the UEED in the area. He said he cannot give exact details since the work is being undertaken by UEED.
