KATHUA, Nov 12: Observing that on-going Panchayat elections are biggest opportunity before women to get their adequate share in the power, Pradesh Mahila Congress president, Indu Pawar today exhorted upon the female members to actively participate in the Panchayat polls.
Addressing a meeting of Mahila Congress workers at Kathua in connection with the on-going Panchayat elections, Pawar said that these elections are very crucial to strengthen democracy at grass root level.
She said that Panchayat is important and vital part of the democratic process, so women must actively participate in the election process. Pawar reminded the workers that it was late Rajiv Gandhi, who had taken revolutionary steps to make Panchayati Raj Institution vibrant in the country.
Pawar especially mentioned about 73rd amendment of the Indian Constitution to highlight role played by late Rajiv Gandhi in making Panchayats powerful. Coming down heavily on BJP leadership for its failure to properly implement 73rd amendment of Indian Constitution in J&K, she regretted that except enjoying power BJP has done nothing to strengthen democratic institution in J&K. Saffron party, she said, has rather bulldozed such institutions to enjoy absolute power without any transparency and accountability.
The Congress leader mentioned that BJP leadership in J&K always created hurdles in conducting Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies elections. It was only after implementation of Governor’s role, she said, serious efforts were made to conduct these elections. Pawar called upon Mahila Congress workers to expose misdeeds of BJP before the masses.
District president Mahila Congress Kathua, Veena Kumari also spoke on the occasion.
