US embassy in Democratic Republic of Congo issues terrorist threat alert

WASHINGTON, Nov 25: The US Embassy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo said on Saturday it had received information about upcoming terrorist attacks against US facilities in Kinshasa.
“The United States Embassy in Kinshasa has received credible and specific information of a possible terrorist threat against US Government facilities in Kinshasa. The US Embassy in Kinshasa will be closed to the public on Monday November 26th,” the embassy said on its website.
The African country has suffered instability since the mid-1990s. The so-called Second Congo War, or the Great War of Africa, ended in 2003, but clashes continued in the eastern areas of the DRC, where various rebel groups continue to operate.
The internal conflict has significantly intensified since late 2016. On October 16, the UN Refugee Agency warned of a deteriorating humanitarian situation in the DRC, sparked by tensions between militia and the government in the Kasai Province.
