SRINAGAR: The Army on Monday paid rich tribute to a soldier, who was martyred in an encounter with militants in south Kashmir district of Shopian on Sunday. Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia said that Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani, who attained martyrdom on Sunday in an encounter in which six militants were also gunned down at Shopian, was on Monday paid a befitting tribute by the Army in a solemn ceremony at Badami Bang Cantonment.
Lt Gen AK Bhatt, Chinar Corps Commander and all ranks, paid homage to the martyr on behalf of a proud nation, he said, adding representatives from other security agencies also joined in paying their last respects to the martyr. Lance Naik Wani, sustained bullet injuries during a fierce operation at Batagund village in Shopian on Sunday.
He was provided immediate first aid and evacuated to 92 Base Hospital, but unfortunately succumbed, Col Kalia said. He said the braveheart form Kulgam district of south Kashmir was a highly decorated soldier and had been twice awarded Sena Medal for gallantry in August 2007 and in August 2018.
The 38-year-old martyr had joined the Army in 2004 and belonged to village Cheki Ashmuji of Kulgam Tehsil in Kulgam, he said, adding Wani is survived by his wife and two children.
The mortal remains of the martyr were taken for last rites to his native place, where he would be laid to rest with full military honours, he said.
In this hour of grief, Col Kalia said the Army stands in solidarity with the bereaved family of the martyr and remains committed to their dignity and well being. (AGENCIES)
