JAMMU, Nov 26: A marriage function was turned into mourning as two women were killed while 20 others including eight children injured, when a Tempo Traveller rolled down into a gorge in Thannamandi area of district Rajouri this afternoon.
Giving details, an official spokesman said that mishap took place at around 3.45 pm when the ill-fated vehicle No. JK12/2495 was on way to Dhana Mangota village near Thannamandi from Lathoon village in Surankote area of district Poonch.
There was a marriage ceremony of the daughter of Mohd Munshi at Dhanna-Mangota on Sunday. Some relatives from the girl’s side had gone to bridegroom’s home in Surankote. Today they were returning home after attending reception party (grand lunch) at boy’s home in Surankote.
One of the accident victims told police that the vehicle was in speed and the driver lost control over it at Meggi Morh near upper Manyal, hardly 4 kms short of Thannamandi town. The vehicle rolled down into nearly 60 meters deep gorge, killing one elderly woman on the spot and causing injuries to the 21 others including driver of the vehicle.

Immediately after the mishap, the Army jawans from the nearby unit rushed to the spot.
The police party led by SHO Nazir Ahmed Dar and SDPO Thannamandi Iftikhar Ahmed also later joined. The civilians of the area also helped in the rescue operation. The Army provided ambulance and also opened local RR unit hospital for the victims where Army doctors and other medical staff provided immediate treatment. The family members from bridegroom side along with newly wedded couple also rushed to the hospital at Thannamandi after coming to know about the tragedy. The function at their home turned into mourning.
While 17 injured persons were referred to District Hospital Rajouri, four were admitted to Thannamandi Community Health Centre. The dead body of the deceased, Nazira Begum (60), wife of Hassan Mohammed, resident of Dhanna was later shifted to the mortuary of Thannamandi hospital and then handed over to the family for last rites after performing legal formalities by police.
In Rajouri hospital, another seriously injured victim succumbed to injuries. She has been identified as Tasveer Kouser (40), wife of Mohd Bashir from the same village. Seriously injured Rubia Akhtar (12), younger sister of bride and daughter of Mohd Munshi was referred to GMC Hospital, Jammu. She was said to be struggling for life.
The other injured persons undergoing treatment in Rajouri and Thannamandi hospitals are- Shehnaz Akhtar (40), wife of Talib Hussain; Mohd Saloom-13, son of Mohd Sarvar , Saleema Kouser-14, daughter of Kabir Hussain; Mohd Shafiq -15, son of Kabir Hussain-15; Hamid Hussain, son of Talib Hussain, Sufara-13, daughter of Haji Farooq; Rashida Begum-55, wife of Alam Din; Shamim Akhtar -21, daughter of Alam Din; Zahida Parveen-15, daughter of Mohd Bashir; Ahmed Raja-04, son of Shakeel Ahmed; Safia Kouser-12, daughter of Talib Hussain; Safina Kouser-27, wife of Zameel Ahmed; Azeem-5, daughter of Zameel Ahmed; Ruksana Kouser-15, daughter of Gulam Hussain ; Nasreen Kouser-10, daughter of Farooq; Kaleem Begum-28, wife of Shakeel Ahmed; Shakeela-36, wife of Mohd Hussain, driver Talib Hussain-24, son of Mohd Farooq and a 2- year-old child, son of Zameel Ahmed, all residents of Dhanna Mangota in Thannamandi. The police has taken cognizance of the matter.
